Spiritualist séance with Cesare Lombroso, Milan, 5th of June 1908

Unidentified photographer, gelatin silver print .

Stereoscopic photograph of a séance held in the Experiment Hall of Milan’s Society for Psychical Research: in addition to the medium Augusto Politi (in the centre) Cesare Lombroso is clearly distinguishable, quite elderly sitting with other men around a table (second from the left).

Various photographs of seances, held in Milan between 1908 and 1909, are preserved in the Museum’s Archive. Lombroso published some of these images in the book Ricerche sui fenomeni ipnotici e spiritici written together with his son-in-law Ferrero just before dying in 1909 and used them to illustrate the description of the numerous seances he attended.

On the picture, we can read some inscriptions, originally placed on the negative: 5.06.08 Ia (date and sequence number of the séance) Marzorati (signature of a spiritualist scientist).
